What is Two-Factor Authentication?
People log-in to conventional websites using only a single master password. More recently, due to cybersecurity concerns, many websites are aiming to boost account security by having users log-in with two-factor authentication (2FA).
In a nutshell, 2FA is a mechanism that allows users to protect passwords with something only they have, such as separate code, picture, or fingerprint. For example, when I log-in to my account, I will enter my password first, and then the website will send me a code via SMS. Only after I enter that code into my account log-in page will I be able to access my account.
Since it’s essentially a two-factor log-in, it ensures that hackers will not be able to access accounts. The hacker may, after some time, crack a password. However, he/she will not be able to log-in, since they do not have access to the second part of the authentication, which is the code/picture/fingerprint.
